Three people murdered an elderly woman in Kolkata and packed her body in a sack filled with vegetables. The group was caught trying to flee with the body packed inside a taxi. Three people have been arrested over the murder of the 60-year-old in Kolkata.
The body of Sujamani Gayen, a 60-year-old resident of Haridebpur in south Kolkata was recovered from a vegetable sack kept inside a yellow taxi (WB 04 F 1020) by a patrol team from the Pargati Maidan police station.
The arrested group were all related to the deceased while one of them was the daughter-in-law of Gayen.
Police intercepted the speeding taxi on the Basanti highway in South 24 Parganas district on Friday when the body was being carried to a secluded place for disposal.
Police say three persons, Malina Mondal, her husband Basudeb and relative Ajay Rang, who were travelling in the taxi confessed to their crime when questioned by the police. Preliminary investigations have revealed that Mondal and her husband along with Ajay Rang killed the
woman over a family dispute.
It is learnt that the Mondals worked as vegetable vendors and would often take the same taxi to ferry vegetables for their shop. On Friday, they took the same cab, loaded it with the sack avoiding any suspicion from the driver.
Mondal’s daughter Sujata was married to deceased Gayen’s son Khokon and there were allegations of domestic violence against the daughter-in-law.
After preliminary investigation, police said Gayen was beaten up with a lathi and then strangulated by the family. All three accused have been produced before the court and have been sent to five days’ police custody.
