Kolkata: Former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station OC Abhijit Mondal, who were arrested in the rape and murder case of a young medic, were granted bail on personal bonds.

The Sealdah Court granted them bail on Friday as CBI could not file any supplementary chargesheet even after 90 days of the incident.

According to sources, when CBI was asked about the progress of the investigation, the agency said that the probe is still on, which means, it is still collecting evidence against Mondal and Ghosh. After this, the accused's lawyers claimed that their clients have been jailed for 90 days and they should now be granted bail.

Responding to their applications, the court granted bail to both of them in exchange for personal bonds of Rs 2000 each.

However, even if they secure bail, Ghosh will have to remain behind bars in the ongoing RG Kar financial corruption case. But since there is no other allegation against Mondal, he will be released from jail for the time being. It is not clear whether he will be able to leave the correctional facility on Friday itself or not. Even if Mandal secures bail, he will have to report to the police station whenever called as he has been granted bail on this condition.

It may be recalled that on August 9, the body of a young doctor was recovered from the seminar hall on the fourth floor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Later, it was learnt that the on-duty doctor was raped and murdered.

The Kolkata Police initially investigated and arrested a civic volunteer on suspicion of being involved in the incident. However, the investigation was later transferred to the CBI and the agency later arrested Ghosh and Mondal.

Questions have already been raised on CBI's investigation process. Earlier, the CBI had claimed in the court that Ghosh and Mondal were directly involved in the destruction of evidence in the incident.
