The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Mumbai busted a multi-state drug cartel and seized 250kg of mephedrone (MD), ephedrine and ketamine drugs worth Rs 47 crore on Monday.
he Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Mumbai busted a multi-state drug cartel and seized 250kg of mephedrone (MD), ephedrine and ketamine drugs worth Rs 47 crore on Monday.
The said drugs were supplied to various cities in India. So far, three people have been arrested in the case.
According to sources, the DRI officers also seized foreign currencies worth Rs 45 lakh.
In the said operation, the mastermind who was illegally manufacturing the drugs was arrested in Hyderabad and other two persons were arrested in Mumbai.
The manufacturing unit of drugs was in Hyderabad and stocks were reportedly supplied to various clients in Mumbai via private bus.
Soon after receiving a tip-off on August 15, DRI officers intercepted a consignment, which contained mephedrone, in Mumbai. The consignment was concealed in a private bus which had no passenger.
The DRI officers seized 210 kg of mephedrone, 10 kg of ketamine and 31kg of ephedrine.
Mephedrone is a synthetic stimulant drug popular among the urban college-going crowd. It is also known as MD or meow meow, etc. and is known for its effects similar to that of MDMA, amphetamines and cocaine.
Ketamine is used as a party and date rape drug. Also known as special K or kit-kat, ketamine leaves the user with a sense of euphoria or a feeling of disconnect from the self. Ephedrine is a highly sought-after chemical precursor in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine.
